Have you ever heard of toxic algae?
I was surprised too when I first heard about them too. Once I read the article though, it was fascinating. The way that the algae grows and forms as stated in the magazine C&EN. This article reads, "when lakes receive excess nitrogen and phosphorus the nutrients accumulate in the lake and as they begin to cycle between algae, water, air, and sediment." These cycles then create the "toxic algal blooms" as they are most commonly known as. It is these blooms that appear to be little green clouds in the water, particularly in lakes.
